Summary
These twenty-four sermons are arranged in a series corresponding to the Church's year; they are not however of one uniform character. Most of them were preached more than once, generally with considerable alteration and adaptation: nearly all are here printed in their ultimate form. Though all are alike in simplicity of language, those written for a village congregation naturally present more elementary aspects of faith and service than those intended for a college chapel or the University church. Since they range over a period of over thirty years, it might be said that those of earlier date do not perhaps represent the author's maturest thought; but the frequent revision which most of them underwent makes it probable that little, if anything, is here printed which he would have disowned. It is hoped that some of the many who found in Dr. Hort's Village Sermons strength and instruction may also welcome these more various discourses from the same mind: in all essentials the characteristics of both series are the same.
The texts and other quotations from the Bible are printed as they stand in the manuscript: it will be noticed that it was often the preacher's practice to give an independent rendering identical with neither English version. In two cases (Nos. XI. and XXII.) I have ventured to supply a title. Nos. VII. and VIII., as also XIX. and XX., were preached consecutively.
