The fourteenth chapter of St. John's Gospel stands out of the New Testament with a distinctness almost peculiar to itself. Probably no chapter has been so much read even by those who seldom open their Bibles at all. The reason is plain. It is chiefly in times of trouble that we are forced, as it were, to wish to learn what God has to say to us; and this chapter has been felt to be well suited to times of trouble. If we ask why it is singled out by so many when they are in trouble, the opening words give us the answer: “Let not your heart be troubled”; repeated again, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.” Our Lord soon goes off to speak of many things which are not often present to our thoughts when we wish for comfort. Perhaps we do not then take the pains to think very much what those questions of Thomas, and Philip, and Jude mean, or even what Christ's answers to them mean. His own first gracious words go sounding on in our ears. We feel that it is Christ who bids us not to be troubled. We may not be able to know how our hearts are to be delivered from trouble, or what kind of comfort it is that He can and will give us.
