Summary
The term ‘ecstasy’ is generally used to refer to MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), although a number of other drugs with similar effects have also been referred to as such.
MDMA is an amphetamine-type stimulant (ATS). It shares some of the features of other ATS, such as amphetamine, but there are also significant differences, including greater hallucinogenic and empathogenic effects. MDMA is structurally similar to both ATS and to mescaline-type hallucinogens.
