Summary

File of privy seal writs and indentures submitted with accounts rendered by the executors of William of Lambeth, the king's clerk of works at the palace of Westminster and the Tower of London (see no. 53).

Physical description: Original file of seven membranes, secured together by a parchment tie; all in reasonable condition and mostly legible; some with seals, partial seals or traces of seals; in Anglo-Norman.

Scope of transcription: Only the four documents relating to the palace of Westminster, and St Stephen's chapel or college (mm. 1–3, 7), have been transcribed. These comprise: a royal privy seal writ to William of Lambeth, ordering him to employ masons and carpenters at the palace of Westminster and Tower of London, dated 20 Aug. 1360 (m. 7); another royal privy seal writ to the same, ordering him to deliver liturgical and other goods to the dean of St Stephen's college, dated 4 Nov. 1361 (m. 3); an indenture attesting to the delivery of these goods, dated 14 Nov. 1361 (m. 1); and another indenture attesting to the delivery to William of Lambeth's successor as clerk of works, William of Sleaford, listed items in the stores of the palace of Westminster and Tower of London, dated 4 Dec. 1361 (m. 2). The three excluded documents relate to royal building works at the castles of Windsor and Hadleigh.
