Learning at Home
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 15 October 2021
Summary
Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence states that ‘Although children spend a lot of time in school, they spend much more time at home.’ Such a pertinent statement is true throughout a child's ‘normal’ school life but especially during the current pandemic. Parents, carers and home are an important part of a child's education. Not only do parents and educators require the resources to encourage and support learning but also the skills to guide the learner and to create the learning environment. It is not an easy task and especially so during a pandemic. None of us have encountered the type of home learning we are all experiencing during COVID-19. Many thousands of children and young people are spending many hours each day viewing online lessons from home. It is an unfamiliar situation for many. There are books on home learning available, but it is unlikely any will have included a guide to learning during this situation. There is some advice becoming available online from many different organisations and most have sensible, practical advice and suggestions. The Royal Academy of Dance (www.royalacademyofdance.org/rad-at-home/tips-andadvice- for-home-study) has a particularly clear and practical set of tips that many parents, teachers and students may find useful and adaptable. There is also practical advice to help children (and their parents) study at home from the BBC (www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/znsmxyc). In addition, Oak National Academy also offers top tips for parents supporting home learning, giving some sensible pointers for success (www.thenational.academy/blog/top-tips-for-parents-supportinghome- learning). Also look at learning in everyday life on Parentkind (www.parentkind.org.uk/Parents/Make-learning-part-of-life) for practical suggestions of incorporating learning into everyday tasks. While tips on home-schooling for a pandemic may become redundant, knowing how to learn at home will continue to be an invaluable skill to develop and understand.
