Summary
Home education is the term used to describe the practice by which parents or carers decide to educate their children outside of the school system.
‘The parent of every child of compulsory school age shall cause him to receive efficient full-time education … either by regular attendance at school or otherwise.’
Education Act 1996, section 7That is, education is compulsory, schooling is not. Home education is different from home schooling or home learning through school closure, with parents electing to ensure that they will provide full-time education to their child. This does not require following the National Curriculum.
