Following a critical review of the ‘missing Yemenite children’ saga, this chapter explores the meanings and changing relevance of ethnicity in contemporary Israeli society. Persistent ethnic inequality is reviewed, and processes of social mobility and significant rates of intermarriage are considered. Ethnicity’s changing meaning is described, and the ‘symbolic ethnicity’ of recent generations is outlined and discussed.
