Summary

Folios 131r–135r contain deeds relating to property in Fleet Street. The red-ink heading at the top of f. 131r reads “Fletestret”, as does that on f. 131v; on f. 132r the red-ink heading is “Fletestret by Standelff”, but thereafter no further headings appear in this section, only the red-ink folio numbers. A further relevant document has been written out on ff. 111r–112r above, in a different hand, presumably as there was insufficient room left at the end of this section.

Grant by John Le Cotiller to Thomas & Diamanda Gyles [15 July 1338 and enrolled 20 July 1338]

May those present and future know that I, John Le Cotiller, son of the late Ralph Le Cotiller, citizen of London, have given, granted, and by this my present deed have confirmed to Thomas Gyles, citizen of London, and Diamanda his wife, a certain messuage with each and all of its appurtenances, which lies in the parish of St Bride the Virgin in Fleet Street in a suburb of London in Farringdon Ward. That messuage contains in length from the king’s road as far as the tenement of the Bishop of Salisbury 50¼ ells measured by the iron ells of our lord the king and one inch. And breadthwise along the king’s road it contains six ells and three wide inches. It also contains breadthwise from the upper part of the hall of the said messuage as far as the lower part of the same messuage, from the eastern to the western side, 14½ ells and three quarters of an ell, measured by the same ells, and nine inches, well measured. And besides it contains breadthwise from the angle of the skew stone of the domestic kitchen of the said messuage as far as a certain earth wall 21¼ ells measured by the said ells and five inches. And on the south side, i.e. the lower part lengthwise of the said messuage, it contains breadthwise 13¾ ells and nine wide inches.
