Summary

Folios 259r–265r contain documents relating to property in Fenchurch Street.

The same scribe as for the previous sections has written these pages. A note in the right-hand margin below the end of the last document copied on f. 265r reads “[in red] Nota: [in black] loke for mo dedis affor at þe lefe at CClij” (where indeed, and on the previous folio, are further deeds relating to this property).

Grant by John de Dorkyng to Hamo Box [n.d. (1284–85)]

May those present and future know that I, John de Dorkyng, citizen of London, have given, granted, and by this my present deed have confirmed to Hamo Box, citizen of the same city, five houses with a curtilage and their appurtenances which I had in the parish of All Hallows Fenchurch, four of which houses are situated between the tenement of Michael Le Porter towards the west and the tenement formerly that of Walter Le Chaloner towards the east. The fifth house is situated between the tenement formerly that of Robert Godlot towards the west and towards the east the tenement of Arnold Bogeys and Katharine his wife, which I have demised to the same Katharine for her whole lifetime. [And I have given, granted, and confirmed also to Hamo Box] all the right and claim which I had or which could come to me or my heirs in any way in the same tenement after the death of the said Katharine. I have also given and granted to the same Hamo five shillings of annual free quit-rent to be received annually at the four principal terms of the year customary in the city of London, i.e. fifteen pence at each term, from all that tenement with appurtenances which Andrew de Balesham, tawyer, has in the same parish on the east side of the said Katharine’s tenement. To have and to hold by the said Hamo, his heirs and assigns and by whomsoever, whensoever, he may wish to give, sell, bequeath, or in any other way assign it and their heirs, from me and my heirs and assigns, freely, quit, well and in peace, in fee and inheritance in perpetuity.
