Summary

Folios 206r–207v contain documents concerning Gutter Lane and Dice Wharf.

The red-ink heading on f. 206r translates as “Thomas Polle gave us these tenements for the upkeep of a chaplain in St Matthew’s church, who should receive 9 marks for his salary”. The heading on f. 206v is “Goderunlane ”, that on f. 207r is “Dyswharf”, and that on f. 207v is “Dyswharf – Polle”.

Grant by Gilbert & Helen de Hoo to Gilbert & Katharine atte Mersshe [6 June 1379 and enrolled 22 July 1387]

May those present and future know that we, Gilbert de Hoo, citizen of London, and Helen his wife, by unanimous assent and wish have given, granted, and by this our present deed have confirmed to Gilbert atte Mersshe, citizen and chandler of London, and Katharine his wife, our daughter, all that tenement with houses built above and all its appurtenances which we formerly had and acquired from William Haveryng and Alice his wife in the parish of St Vedast, in Gutter Lane, London, as may appear plainly in a certain document drawn up by the aforesaid William and Alice for us, the aforesaid Gilbert and Helen, and enrolled at the Guildhall of London. Which tenement with appurtenances is situated between the tenement of Richard Betele, mercer, and Margaret his wife on the south side and the tenement of William Stameldene, goldsmith, on the north side. To have and to hold all the aforesaid tenement with houses built above and all its appurtenances by the aforesaid Gilbert atte Mersshe and Katharine his wife and by the heirs and assigns of the same Gilbert atte Mersshe, from the chief lords of that fee by the services due from it and accustomed by right. And we, the aforesaid Gilbert de Hoo and Helen, and the heirs of myself, Gilbert de Hoo, shall warrant against all people in perpetuity the whole of the aforesaid tenement with houses built above and all its appurtenances to the aforesaid Gilbert atte Mersshe and Katharine his wife and to the heirs and assigns of the same Gilbert atte Mersshe. In testimony of which …, John Philippot then Mayor of the city of London, Thomas Cornwaleys and John Bosham then sheriffs of the same city, and Robert de Boxford then alderman of that ward.
