Summary
PROBLEMS AND SOURCES
Recent contributions dealing with the period 1630–5 include works by Dieter Albrecht – particularly his concise monograph on the relations of Richelieu and Gustavus Adolphus with Germany and the last section of his book Die auswärtige Politik Maximilians von Bayern, 1618–1635. The biography of Olivares by G. Marafñon, still useful for Spanish policy, has recently been supplemented by A. Domínguez Ortiz and F. Tomás Valiente.
R. Quazza's monograph remains the authoritative assessment of the Mantuan War; D. Albrecht and A. Leman have traced the continually shifting policy of the papal Curia.
Work on Wallenstein was reviewed in the previous chapter; to it must be added the standard military history of the Thirty Years' War by E. von Frauenholz. Of the most recent publications, the study by Beladiez has been mentioned; new biographies of Wallenstein have been published by Golo Mann and Josef Janáček.
The background of Swedish history is supplied by the German version of Ingvar Andersson's Schwedische Geschichte and the abridged English version of Eli F. Heckscher's classic Economic History of Sweden. Nils Ahnlund's Gustav Adolf, King of Sweden is another classic of Swedish historiography. Michael Roberts has written a remarkable biography of the Lion of the North, combining a straightforward presentation with the analysis of several particular themes. He has also studied the earlier growth of Swedish power and edited an important anthology of essays on seventeenth-century Swedish history.
