Summary
As a conclusion to this report on the present state of research into the Thirty Years' War and the new sources at our disposal, we can see that in general terms the problem to be dealt with is one which for three centuries has been to a greater or lesser degree a burning issue for European society. One might take the view that the social changes century. But to appreciate the full implications of this change we should have to step past the limit of 1650 and seek in the destinies of the next generation the direct consequences of the Thirty Years' War. It is, however, not unreasonable to hope that on the basis of the research already accomplished we may proceed to a better understanding of the rise in Europe, during the first half of the seventeenth century, of new conceptions of life and society.
