Summary

Given that the modern study of religion is based in large part on the description of a camel sacrifice said to have been performed by a group of Arabs in fifth or sixth century CE Sinai, it is surprising that so little attention has been given to the camel sacrifice of the prophet Muhammad. Just shortly before his death, ten years after his emigration to Medina, the prophet Muhammad performed a valedictory or “goodbye pilgrimage” [ḥajjat al-wadāʾ] at Mecca. At the conclusion of the pilgrimage he made an elaborate sacrifice of camels.
