Summary
As indicated in A105, the first printing of Sampson Low's engaging and successful Pastoral Poems of William Wordsworth was unfortunately of P27 texts, which were still under copyright, and a revised second printing, of publicdomain P15 texts, was required to produce legally publishable sheets. Examples of the first issue, which had an imprint date of “1858” (A105.a), are normally found made up wholly of the second-printing sheets (one gathering from the first printing has been noted in one copy). But most later issues are misleadingly dated, and their text sheets are mixed. In a 12-copy sample including examples of all dated later issues found of the book, A105.b.1–8, every copy was found to be a mixture of the two printings, but no patterns of mixture were discerned other than that sheets from both were present in each, and that the mix included at least three of the P27 sheets. The mixing and misdating were financially imposed expedients.
The ledger of the printer of the book, Edmund Evans (UNC), records under the date “1857” working 21 reams of paper for “Wordsworth,” and, below, under “Dec 22 [1857],” “Engraving Title page vignette (omitted [from previous charges for engravings]) Wordsworth” and “proving and printing” 1,575 covers (no example of the covers has been seen). After two entries for a different book comes an entry for the printing of “Wordsworth/Town Edn,” for which eight more reams of paper were worked.
