Summary
Mentally disordered offenders present with complex needs across multiple domains. Psychological therapies are just one part of the range of interventions across multiple levels that contribute to an understanding of ‘what works’ in risk reduction and mental health restoration. This chapter will explore the service, legal and evidence based contexts for the management and treatment of mentally disordered offenders. There are challenges to the implementation of interventions adapted from correctional and mental health contexts, but there is an emerging evidence base for ‘what works’, particularly among residents of secure hospitals. A brief description of the needs of mentally disordered offenders is followed by examples of interventions common to international services, and discussion of some of the challenges of developing an evidence base of ‘what works’ in reducing risk and restoring mental health. Further engagement with ‘what works and for whom’ is required, with a focus on identity, culture and diversity.
