Summary

Fra Mauro 6.1°S, 17.0°W

Fra Mauro is a greatly destroyed complex crater, 101 km in diameter. The western half of the crater's floor is entirely covered with hummocks and ejecta from the Imbrium impact. Cracks and graben run across the centre in the north-south direction. The rock samples that the Apollo 14 astronauts collected in the vicinity date the Imbrium impact to about 3.85 billion years ago.

The Apollo 14 landing site lies a short distance north of the crater wall of Fra Mauro. The large rille that runs right through the crater remnant in the north-south direction is a section of the Rimae Parry rille system. The crater is named after a Venetian monk and cartographer, who died in 1459.

North of Fra Mauro lie two north-south oriented ridges; Fra Mauro Eta (20 × 10 km with a summit crater) and Fra Mauro Zeta. Both may be ascribed to the Imbrium Sculpture, and where Fra Mauro Eta may be considered as a small ‘pointer’ directly indicating the centre of the Imbrium impact.

Gambart 1.0°N, 15.2°W

A circular, lava-filled crater, 25 km in diameter. Gambart A (12 km) west of Gambart is a smaller crater with a ray system. A volcanic dome with a base diameter of about 10 km lies near the craters Gambart B and C (both about 12 km). Marked with an arrow on the image is an object, which might actually be a dome. For its diameter, Gambart is extremely shallow.
