Summary

The framework of the Proximity and Valence Rules lends itself to an analysis of correct voting. Among voters not cross pressured between choosing the stronger valence candidate and the candidate closer to their ideological preference, 87 percent voted correctly. Among cross-pressured voters, proximity voting dominates valence voting 4:1. Voters closer to the ideological cut point between the candidates are more likely to cast incorrect votes. Among cross-pressured voters, those closer to the cut point increasingly cast correct valence votes. Party identification is a powerful proxy for correct proximity voting; incumbency is less powerful as a proxy for valence voting. Incumbency decreases correct proximity voting among cross-pressured voters, but increases correct voting on valence.
