3 - Purchase and Storage of Chemical Reagents
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 05 September 2014
Summary
Every scientific and educational institution with activity profile connected with a use of chemical reagents has to aquire the chemicals, except these not numerous synthetized on own premises, from external sources.
Purchase of chemical reagents
The best solution is a choice of few chemical supply companies out of which the two should be main. The first should supply the basic reagents for educational purposes and elementary syntheses (solvents, simple salts and substrates) – usually a national entrepreneur. The second supplier should posses a worldwide distribution network and should guarantee the possibility of supplying the specialty chemicals of high quality. A contract should be signed with these two companies clearly laying down the conditions of purchase and transportation (a possibility of ensuring through negotiations the free transport is suggested), the forms and terms of payment, the way of placing orders (i.e. by fax, e-mail, phone, etc.) and the available discount programmes. Making use of services of other suppliers is occasional – mostly due to specific characteristics of the preparations which are manufactured or supplied most often only by these companies.
Every company regardless of the scope of supplies is obliged to have an agreement of sale that is valid in a given country. Each reagent must be provided with: a quality certificate (indicating the date of applicability, the results of purity analysis, the producer and the supplier), chemical safety card (unless the relevant regulations release from this obligation).
