Summary

It came to pass that while the King of Castile was in Puebla de Montalbán, which was where he stayed after we left off narrating his activities, he received the news that King Fernando was dead. As soon as he heard this, the very next day he immediately summoned to his chamber his brother Don Alfonso, who was the Count of Gijón. He told him that he had received news that his father[-in-law] King Fernando had passed away. For that reason, in order to be safe from Don Alfonso, since he was married to King Fernando's daughter [Isabel], and since he feared that he would rush into Portugal and stir up strong feelings in that kingdom, he had decided to arrest him.

The count was astounded to hear this and entreated him to continue keeping the promise which he had made to him when they had received the Body of Christ together. The king answered that he was not interested in his arguments, because he was quite certain that, after the count had left Gijón and had come in answer to his summons, he had committed a grave error in sending letters to Portugal in disservice to him, the king.

The count swore that he had never done any such thing and [again] entreated him to keep his promise, but the king, who paid no heed to what he said, handed him over as a prisoner to Don Pedro Tenorio, the Archbishop of Toledo, who brought him out of the palace, where some fifty horsemen awaited him. He entrusted him to one of the most honourable members of his own entourage and, then, he made his way to where the count was staying and arrested the countess his wife, sending her straightaway to Toledo, which lay 5 leagues away. The count was also taken there and, as he remained a prisoner there for a long time, the king gave the territory of Noreña to the Church in Oviedo and confiscated to the Crown all other property which the count possessed in Asturias.
