Summary

French Christians fought bitterly amongst themselves through the end of the Algerian War over the relationship between religion and politics. The complexity of this issue is illustrated in several examples. One key example contrasts the positions of Monseigneur Duval, the Archbishop of Algiers, and that of the para-military settler organization, the OAS (Secret Armed Organization). Mgr Duval encountered enormous resistance from the French military and conservative Catholics in Algeria as he attempted to influence Christian morality and actions in the midst of the heightened political tensions of the Algerian War and the rise of the OAS. In reaction, the OAS bombed Duval and his allies as well as the French Protestant aid organization Cimade, whose members helped uncover the scandal surrounding the “regroupment camps” in Algeria. By the early 1960s, the rhetoric of the European settler population adopted the terminology of a “religious war.”
