Foreword
Summary
Eighty-five years have passed since this diary commenced, and with it began an enterprise that has grown to proportions which even its creator could hardly have envisaged when he embarked upon a career in West Africa.
John Holt was the product of that great age we now term the Victorian era, and apart from the gift of a first-class brain, he possessed, as the reader will perceive, the sturdy qualities of the time, coupled with a simple religious faith, which lasted him to the end.
In these days it is opportune that occasion be afforded to look back at the beginnings of this family business, particularly for all those concerned with its fortunes. May it be that they, and all who read, shall derive inspiration from the pages that follow.
