Aberystwyth University was founded in 1872. The Library has existed primarily to support teaching and research within the University. Special collections in the library have come into being in 2 ways: by individuals’ bequests which have been retained as a collection or eventually collected together, and by bringing together related material from various sources within the library.
Early Printed books collection. C.800 separate works, 1501–1700; 93 STC and 294 Wing items. A mixed collection with a good deal of theology and classical texts, some early scientific material and 15 pamphlets relating to the Popish Plot of 1678.
Books Printed before 1701 in the Library … (1972). Additions have been made since.
books Printed between 1701 and 1800. C.5,000 v., covering mainly theology, history, classics, English and French literature and law. A number have interesting ownership associations, e.g. ownership by Sir Isaac Newton, Horace Walpole and Daniel Rowland.
Rare books Printed after 1800. C.13,000 v. Particular col lections include:
Castle Cottage gift. 109 items presented by
Gwyn and Mair Jones, concentrating on private
presses (e.g. Golden Cockerel, Nonesuch) with
which G. Jones was associated. Also c.200 items
from modern private presses including all
books from the Gregynog Press (1923–1940)
and the Gwasg Gregynog (1976–).
Challinor gift. C.800 items, 18th–20th cent.,
chiefly of important texts in British geology and
natural history.
Duff Pamphlet collection. C.1,000 pamphlets
and offprints, chiefly later 19th cent. – early
20th cent., on classical subjects.
John Camden hotten collection. Publications
by John Camden Hotten, publisher in London
1856–1873. Collection built up since 1971; currently
numbers c.130 items.
S. h. f. Johnston gift. C.2,000 v., with particular
emphasis on British military history and
regimental histories, the Peninsular War and
18th-cent. Scottish history. Mainly late 18th
cent.–1914.
