Summary

The chapter explores the many ways in which narratives transport emotion without recurring on perspectives (cf. chapter 4). A strong structural homology between emotion process and narrative structure is demonstrated. Although narratives are prose, they may have strong poetic qualities, such as repetitions, figurative language, formulaic expressions, and a basic line and verse structure. They give narrative a musical quality that serves mnemonic functions as well as the synchronization of narrators and listeners. Then a series of lexical devices to communicate emotions in narratives is discussed. Finally, analyses of example narratives demonstrate how the act of narrating itself transports emotion.
