(Commentary on Psalm 90; extracts)
Hilton's authorship of the commentary on Psalm 90 (‘Qui Habitat’; A.V. 91:‘He that dwelleth’) is not certain, but is suggested by parallels in thought and expression with The Scale, Book II, as in the handling of the theme of the opening of the spiritual eye.

… [4] Scapulis suis obumbrabit tibi, et sub pennis eius sperabis. Oure Lord schal with his schuldres umbischadwe thee, and undir his fedris thou schalt hope.
… The fetheris of oure Lord ben the wordis of hooli writ, endited bi the Hooli Gost in comfort of chosen soulis travailynge in myrkenesse of this liyf, the whiche wordes, yif thei ben truli fastened in a meke soule, thei beren up the soule from al ertheli filthe into heveneli conversacion, as fetheris beeren briddes up in to the eire. … Thou schalt thorugh touchinge of thise wordis flee up fro gree unto gree, that is fro bodili exercice unto goostli, til thou come to perfeccion that thou mai see oure Lord in the mount of Syon. …
[5] Scuto circumdabit te veritas eius; non timebis a timore nocturno. His soothfastnesse schall goo aboute thee with a scheld, and thou schalt not drede the drede of the nyght.
