In the first lecture I maintained that for their account of the Last Supper, Matthew and Luke depended solely on Mark. For Matthew this may cause no difficulty, but you may be surprised that I suggest this for Luke.
You will remember that the scribes who copied the New Testament text over the centuries made two kinds of alteration, mistakes and deliberate changes. I shall first propose that we have to deal with a series of deliberate changes which produced various forms of Luke's text.
In the light of this, let us look at L. xxii.15–20 in Form A, as it stands in the Revised Version of 1881, with which the Authorised Version substantially agrees:
(15) He said unto them, ‘With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: (16) for I say unto you, I will not eat it, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.’ (17) And he received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, ‘Take this, and divide it among yourselves: (18) for I say unto you, I will not drink from henceforth of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.’ (19) And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave to them, saying, ‘This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.’ (20) And the cup in like manner after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, even that which is poured out for you.’
