Summary

Those who live and work on Arran are exposed to a stream of field parties during many months of the year. Geology students visiting the island should be sensitive to this and cause as little disruption to the environment and inhabitants as possible. Whilst recommended routes and field exercise areas are described in this book, this does not necessarily indicate a right of way and it is the user's responsibility to check and obtain permisssion where appropriate. In particular, it is important to:

  1. 1 Keep to marked footpaths and avoid disturbing livestock and crops.

  2. 2 Follow temporary diversions when signposted.

  3. 3 Only cross fences at stiles or gates.

  4. 4 Remember to close gates.

  5. 5 Take all litter home with you or place in litter bins.

  6. 6 Keep any collecting to a minimum (if it is necessary at all); it is better to take a photograph instead.

Anyone persuing geology in the field should be aware of, and follow the Geologists' Association leaflet; A Code for Geological Field Work, available from The Librarian, The Geologists' Association, c/o Department of Geology, University College, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT.
