Summary
Die Schlacht am Eurymedon und Kimons cyprischer Feldzug
Ueber die Schlacht am Eurymedon begnügt sich Thukydides mit der kurzen Notiz (1,100): „Nach diesen Ereignissen fand aueh die Land- und Seeschlacht der Athener und ihrer Bundesgenossen gegen die Perser am Fluss Eurymedon in Pamphylien statt, und zwar siegten die Athener an demselben Tage auf beiden Schauplätzen unter Kimon's Führung und nahmen und vernichteten im Ganzen ungefähr 200 phönikische Trieren.‟ Das Ereigniss war allbekannt, eine zusammenhängende Erzählung des Krieges nicht die Aufgabe des Schriftstellers, der nur die Hauptmomente der Entwickelung der Maeht Athens kurz zusammenstellen will. So genügt ein kurzer Hinweis auf die glänzende Waffenthat; gerade der trockene Chronikstil wirkt angesichts des ungeheuren Erfolges nur urn so mächtiger. Für die Späteren und für uns aber ist die Folge, dass wir liber den Gang des Feldzugs und der Schlacht nur sehr dürftig unterrichtet sind.
Aus späterer Zeit besitzen wir zwei Schlachtschilderungen, die aber in jeder Einzelheit so vollständig von einander abweichen, dass Niemand auf den Gedanken koramen würde, sie auf dasselbe Ereigniss zu beziehen, wenn sie nicht eben beide die Schlacht am Eurymedon darzustellen behaupteten. Der eine Bericht ist der des Ephoros, den Diodor XI, 60 – 62 mittheilt. Dass er aus Ephoros stammt, wird dadurch bestätigt, dass in ihm die von Plutarch (Cim. 12) aus Ephoros mitgetheilten Daten wiederkehren: die Zahl 350 für die persischen Schiffe — dass Diodor statt dessen 340 giebt, ist keine ernstliche Variante) — und die Angabe, dass die persische Flotte yon Tithraustes, das Landheer von Pherendates commandirt wurde, während Kallisthenes nur einen Obergeneral nannte, Ariomandes S. d. Gobryas. Das ist nicht nur eine äusserliche Differenz, sondern beweist, dass Ephoros die Schlacht so erzählt haben muss wie Diodor angiebt.
