Summary
The use of small-scale ivories in the courts of Flanders, Brabant, and France is examined, drawing on documentary sources. The tale of Pygmalion, whose ivory sculpture comes to life in response to erotic desires, broadens the contemplative possibilities inherent in the private devotional use of Gothic ivories.
