Summary
God no longer hears so well,
needs woofering, tannoys on full blast.
Kyrie eleison may shout cicadas down
but not the island's baffle-less exhausts.
They're levering someone's coffin out
of baked ground, bones to dress
in vinegar. The bay is raucous with
mnemósynon and motor bikes,
scootering Helen ruffling tamarisks,
Odysseus wowing trail-bike gears,
piling into history along the oleandered lane.
I sit on a balcony in searing and
rebounding light; cats stretch out under
burning bougainvillea, hibiscus poke
pollened tongues; beyond that jasmine goats
jeer under silvery olive trees.
My host, not listening, finds his own
comforts and confirmations,
scrubbing his tiled table under lucent vines,
arranging stuffed tomatoes in a dish,
sorting out the cats, while his brother, other-minded,
brings me kóllyvo, consecrated, sweet.
