17 - Responsibility to Society, Professional Identity, and Access to Justice

Summary

At the end of the last chapter, you were given the chance to imagine your wildest dream for your life in the law. You had the opportunity to vividly picture yourself having the impact you want on society and the opportunity to write about that impact at length. You even got a chance to visualize a world in which you were at the helm of something bigger and larger than you, and how, through that image, the world could change in meaningful and dramatic ways. We promised that in this last full chapter, we would explore how to create that place, which we will do now.

But first, we ask you also to imagine law school and the legal profession as a place in which you feel at home and of use to society as a whole.

TRANSFORMING LAW SCHOOLS TO SERVE OUR INTERESTS AND THOSE OF SOCIETY

Think back to the feeling you had when you first entered the law school building? Did you feel out of place? Did it seem like you did not fit in?

If you felt out of place, perhaps it is because law school did not embody your ideas of justice or your dreams for yourself as a lawyer. Perhaps that uneasy feeling of being out of place had more to do with the place than with you. Perhaps it was the formality, the lack of formality, the values, the lack of values, or just the way the building looked.

LAW PAUSE

Take ten minutes to write a few paragraphs on the following:

What would it take to make the law school climate just right for you? What would it take to change that climate to fit you, rather than you changing to conform to it?

Put another way, imagine what the profession would look like if you could build it from the ground up. How would it be different, in terms of training, focus, and emphasis? How about the teaching and the learning? Imagine what the profession could look like if law school was really good not just for you but for the people you want to serve.
