Qualitative risk assessment: process of risk assessment that uses qualitative methods. Possibilities include: a. qualitative characterizations where health risks are identified but not quantified, e.g. hazard evaluations and carcinogen classification schemes; b. qualitative risk estimations where chemicals are ranked or classified by broad categories of risk, e.g. chemical potency classification schemes; c. semi-quantitative approaches where effects levels, e.g. “no observable effects” are used in combination with uncertainty factors to establish “safe” exposure levels.
