Summary
At BBC Broadcasting House, 27 November 1990
Sir John Manduell was born in Johannesburg in 1928 and studied at Strasbourg, Jesus College, Cambridge, and with Berkeley at the Royal Academy of Music. He joined the BBC in 1956, co-ordinated the new Music Programme from 1964 to 1968, and then became first Director of Music at the University of Lancaster. From 1971 to 1996 he was Principal of the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, establishing its international reputation. He ran the Cheltenham Festival 1969–94, a period which included Berkeley's presidency. He was knighted in 1989.
pd Do you remember how you first came across Lennox Berkeley's music?
jm I can remember it distantly and yet with enormous affection: it was when I was at school at Haileybury. Colin Horsley, a New Zealander who hadn't been in this country very long, came down to play along with Alan Loveday. He must have played the piano Preludes because I remember the first one very clearly.
pd What led to your studying with him?
jm I came to him quite late: I'd been to Cambridge then won a scholarship to the Royal Academy. Initially I studied with William Alwyn, for whom I also have affectionate memories. I was so drawn to Lennox's music and somehow instinctively felt I was drawn to him, although I'd met him very briefly. I felt, as a student, that I wanted to be learning from this very remarkable man.
