Summary

[Canzonetta I: In Airy Dreams]

Canzonetta II: Remembrance

While I behold the moon's pale beam,

Her light perhaps reflects on Thee;

As wand'ring near the Silver Stream,

Thy sad remembrance turns to me,

Ah! to forget the wish were vain,

Our Souls were form'd so fond to be,

No more I'll murmur and complain,

If thou my Love will think on me.

Silent and sad I shape my way,

As fortune deigns my Bark to steer;

Of hope a faint and distant ray

Our far divided days shall cheer.

Ah! to return to meet again

Dear blissful thought, with love and thee;

No more I murmur and complain,

For thou my Love will think on me.

Canzonetta III: Ye Clouds

Ye clouds that hover o'er my head,

And shade with Grief my careful Brow,

Since Hope is lost, and Love is dead,

What have the Fates to threaten now?

‘Tis past and Joy is fled away,

Sad Sighs and Tears alone remain,

A dream of Woe Life wears away,

He's gone and my Complaints are vain.

Canzonetta V: Delightful Dreams of Future Joy

Delightful dreams of future Joy

That gilds the dawn with chearful ray

Why should the Clouds of Care destroy

The smiling promise of the day.

Yet still to Love and Fancy true,

My heart deluded Wand'rer flies,

The dreams of Youth shall still pursue

‘Till Hope is lost and Fancy dies.

But far beyond the Azure Sky

Hope flies to seek some happier clime

While Fancy's Airy Visions die,

They fade away with fleeting time,

Where then is left the Soul to rest,

But in Oblivion's peaceful Shade,

Since Love and Joy forsake the breast

Since Hope is lost and Fancy dead.

Canzonetta VI: Fate too Severe

Fate, too severe, twin'd my sad days,

Beneath the gloomy Cypress shade,

Nor shall Myrtle or the Bays

E'er bloom on my devoted head,

For Virtue form'd I feel her pow'r,

Nor Love can sooth, nor Hope can save,

Friendship alone can smooth the hour

Which leads me to the peaceful Grave.

Canzonetta VII: Why Glides the Hours

Why glides the hours so swift away,

When Love and Fortune shine?
