Osaka's landmark department store, Takashimaya, was notfar from home for Nobuko (see Map 1 Osaka on p.110).She took advantage of their newly establishedembroidery workshop as one of their culturalprojects and from 1973, after our marriage, she tooklessons in embroidery there. This hobby was to addlustre to her daily life. In April 1975, we moved toSabae because of my work but she still made the200km journey to Osaka once a week for a year ormore to continue her lessons. She embroidered thecloths she had knitted and used them to decorate ourrooms and table-tops, an activity which gave hermuch pleasure. It was probably also a way ofexpressing her joy at our marriage. I am still usingsome of these embroidered pieces and the ones not inuse are carefully stored away in the attic in Kyoto.I came across these just as Nobuko's and my modestTwo People Exhibition: Calligraphy and Photographywas about to open. This was held in conjunction withthe publication of CollectedMoments: The Life of Nobuko and staged atthe Miyakōmesse where, two and three years earlier,the Group Wonder Exhibitions 2014 and 2015 had takenplace. Some of the works decorate the walls in myhouse now.
