Summary
Introduction
The precise flows of money through the NHS are subject to regular review and change as different political leaders seek to obtain best value for the taxpayer.
The money spent by the NHS is public money, which is very different from private money in terms of the responsibilities placed on those that spend and those that audit the spend. There is a wealth of examples in history and from around the world of corruption in the use of public money. In the UK there are a multitude of processes to prevent corruption. These can seem to be impediments and to cause great frustration but are essential given the vast sums of taxpayers' money allocated to healthcare.
