Summary

Myth narrates a sacred history; it relates an event that took place in primordial Time, the fabled time of the ‘beginnings’.

Mircea Eliade, Myth and Reality
For the better part of the last 200 years, the purpose of the writing of history has been to determine what really happened. As a matter of principle, it excluded sacred stories that involved the supernatural world from its consideration. These were relegated to the realm of myth, to be explained as the imaginary product of other more terrestrial concerns – social, political, psychological, or economic.
