Summary
In Chapter 9, I argued that once we shed the myth of American exceptionalism, we can see that the United States is marked by parallels with a variety of democratic experiences; with the “pernicious polarization” of post–World War I Italy; with the struggle to consolidate democracy amid deep inequality in Chile; and with the formation of a coalition for democracy in South Korea. In this final section, I will argue that the future of democracy in the United States will turn in many respects on how movements and parties navigate the shoals of a deep democratic crisis.
