Summary

The purpose of this final chapter is to bring closure to this analysis of Nietzsche’s free spirit works. It does this by showing how Nietzsche’s free spirit project relates to two post-Zarathustra texts: the second chapter of Beyond Good and Evil (1886) and the fifth chapter of The Gay Science that was added to the 1887 edition of the work. In discussing the former text, it is argued that the free spirit is the precondition for the emergence of a new sort of philosopher, namely, the philosopher of the future. In contrast, the latter text provides a retrospective description of the free spirit project from the standpoint of a now mature free spirit. It is also argued that both texts point to incipit parodia and the comedy of Nietzsche’s 1888 works.
