Summary

Cum annis abhinc viginti et duobus novam graeci textus Novi Testamenti recensionem in lucem emittere inciperem, timidiuscule doctorum virorum judicia exspectabam. Novus enim et paene temerarius videbatur ausus, a textu recedere vulgo recepto, qui diuturno usu inter omnes ita obtinuerat, ut sanctitatis quandam speciem prae se ferret. Per duo fere secula editores omnes repetierant vel Stephanicum textum, vel Elsevirianum, qui tamen ipse etiam, si levissimas perpaucorum locorum immutationes excipias, e solis Stephani et Bezae editionibus compilatus erat. Post Elsevirium qui Novum Testamentum typis ita exscribi curarunt, ut a textu sive Stephanico sive Elseviriano discederent, vel paucissimas tantum lectiones, easque nullius fere momenti, refinxerunt, ut Erasmus Schmidius; vel acriter a viris doctis ac indoctis reprehensi fuerunt, ut Macius, Novi Testamenti graecoanglicani editor; vel in conatu substiterunt nec quae animo conceperant perfecere, ut Bentlejus; vel e pluribus tantum editionibus lectiones, quae optimae ipsis videbantur, selegerunt, ut Bengelius, qui ipse legem sanxerat: ut ne syllabam quidem, nisi antehac in una alterave editione admissam, textus ipsius admitteret.
