Summary
Freda Laughton was born in Bristol but married and settled in Co. Down. Little is known about her life and work. She published just one collection of poems, A Transitory House (1945), and by the time this book was published Laughton's work had already been praised by critics and was starting to appear in anthologies such as Devin A. Garrity's New Irish Poets (1948). Her directness of address, together with a rich and sensory handling of language, marks her out from her peers.
