Summary

This chapter uses interdisciplinary methods in historical and cultural studies to examine the circumstances surrounding the commission, publication and transmission of the War of Troy, the first and longest of the Palaiologan romances. Strong arguments have been advanced that the composition of the work was the result of Angevin patronage some time between 1267 and 1281, through the person of Leonardo da Veroli, chancellor of the principality of Achaea. This conclusion can be drawn both by examining the material culture of book production (particularly through the study of the book as a luxury item given as an occasional gift, and the historical context of book production and exchange in the historical context of the Angevin-occupied Morea) and through more literary analysis, such as an investigation into the political elements lurking in the War of Troy.
