Summary

The bishop of Winchester's execution of the royal writs for a parliament and convocation on 13 October 1372

Willelmus, permissione divina Wintoniensis episcopus, dilecto filio officiali archidiaconi nostri Wintoniensis, salutem, gratiam et benedictionem. Breve domini nostri regis recepimus hunc tenorem habens: ‘Edwardus etc. Quia de avisamento concilii nostri’ etc., ut inter alia brevia regia plenius continetur. Vobis etiam vigore dicti brevis firmiter iniungimus et mandamus quatenus praemuniatis seu faciatis praemuniri archidiaconum nostrum Wintoniensem ac clerum archidiaconatus eiusdem, quod idem archidiaconus in propria persona, dictusque clerus per unum procuratorem idoneum plenam et sufficientem potestatem ab ipso clero habentem praedictis die et loco intersint, facturi et recepturi quod tenor et effectus dicti brevis exigunt et requirunt, et nos de facto vestro in praemissis una cum nomine [78v] procuratoris a dicto clero electi citra dictam quindenam certificetis, literas vestras patentibus habentibus hunc tenorem. Datum apud Wolnesey decimo octavo die mensis Septembris anno Domini millesimo tricentesimo LXXIIo et nostrae consecrationis anno quinto [18 September 1372].

A note adds that similar letters were sent to the archdeacon of Surrey and to the prior and chapter of Winchester on the dame day.

Willelmus, Dei gratia Wintoniensis episcopus dilecto filio archidiacono nostro Surriensi931 vel eius officiali salutem, gratiam et benedictionem. Brevi domini regis recepimus in haec verba: ‘Edwardus’ etc. Cuius vigore brevis vobis committimus et mandamus quatenus prorogationem dicti parliamenti, sic ut praefertur factam, clero archidiaconatus praedicti cum omni celeritate congrua faciatis plenarie intimari. Vosque archidiaconum praelibatum tenore preaentium praemunimus, et per vos clerum eiusdem archidiaconatus praemuniri volumus et mandamus, quod vos in propria persona idemque clerus per unum procuratorem idoneum apud Westmonasterium in dicto crastino Animarum [3 November 1372] intersitis et intersit, ad faciendum et consentiendum his quae tune de consilio dicti regni contigerit ordinari. Et quid feceritis in praemissis, una cum nomine et cognomine dicti cleri electi, nos citra festum Omnium Sanctorum [1 November 1372] certificetis literis vestris patentibus, habentibus hunc tenorem. Datum apud Farnham, octavo die mensis Octobris anno Domini MCCCLXXII [8 October 1372].
