Summary
Elizabeth Barrett had established herself as poet long before she met the poet Robert Browning, a relationship celebrated in her most famous poems, Sonnets from the Portuguese. Less well known is Aurora Leigh, her novel in blank verse about a young woman who becomes a writer. After her marriage to Robert, against her father’s wishes, the couple moved to Italy, where they both often wrote on Italian themes. She died in Florence.
