Summary
Understanding is the reward of faith. Therefore seek not to understand that you may believe, but believe that you may understand.
Augustine 1873, 29.6.Finally, we turn to religion. More precisely, we turn to the Christian religion, and even more precisely, we turn to the Christian religion of the West. Let us start with the Christian's basic statement of faith, the Apostles' Creed. I use the Anglican version, from the Book of Common Prayer:
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. AMEN.
Now, we have to whittle down the discussion somewhat, so I am going to brush past a great deal of Christian theology, especially much that has to do with specific notions like the Trinity, important though they are.
