Summary

Nature and history underlay the appeal of the shrine of Sainte-Reine, in the small town of Alise in Burgundy. Sainte-Reine sat on layers of history and natural wonders. Dedicated to an early Christian female martyr and located in a hilly region scattered with fountains, springs, and medicinal waters, the Sainte-Reine shrine shows how crucial elevated places and water were to shrines’ allure. Water and elevated places had also defined the region’s Gallo-Roman sanctuaries. This reminds us that the early modern period is only a moment in the long history of those holy places. The ambient antiquity of the region around the Sainte-Reine shrine added to the early modern shrine’s authority. Catholic reform fueled the expansion of the Sainte-Reine shrine after 1600. Chaplains orchestrated a rich pageantry to showcase their saint’s history and miracles: Processions featuring relics, images, candles, and bonfires impressed pilgrims and visitors alike. But visitors were also drawn to Sainte-Reine because of the region’s famed waters and medicinal springs, which included the shrine’s own fountain. Sainte-Reine had many visitors in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. But it was difficult to distinguish pilgrims from the suffering poor, and from those who visited one or more shrines while on a longer journey that might not be a pilgrimage.
