Summary

The chapter explores what pilgrims sought at the shrines of the central Pyrenees, and exposes the multiple meanings assigned to nature – especially to water and mountains – by the region’s residents and visitors. The language of marvels was as often applied to mountains, valleys, and waters as to surprising cures or lucky escapes from disaster. The topography and climate of the Pyrenees were among the greatest natural wonders of the age. Divine grace also surprised people by unexpectedly interrupting their lives. So there was in the early modern imagination a convergence between the vagaries of nature and the arbitrary exercise of God’s will. The chapter also shows how many different individuals, communities, and institutions contributed to the shrines’ creation. Bishops, chaplains, and religious orders authorized, promoted, and supervised the shrines. But local communities played a vital role in making shrines what they were. For it was only after a place had acquired a local reputation for marvels and miracles that bishops saw what the church had to gain by authorizing shrines.
