Summary

Prepositions

Small but highly significant, prepositions enable sentences to be expanded and more and more complex ideas to be expressed.

Prepositions perform two major syntactic functions –

  1. linking verbs to adjectives, nouns and other verbs

  2. preceding nouns to form prepositional expressions

French prepositions

The following is a list of French prepositions. Some consist of a single word, others consist of more than one word.

Single-word prepositions

à, après, avant, avec, chez, compris, contre, dans, de, depuis, derrière, dès, devant, durant, en, entre, envers, environ, excepté, malgré, par, parmi, pendant, pour, sans, sauf, selon, sous, suivant, sur, vers

Multi-word prepositions

à cause de, à condition de, à côté de, afin de, à force de, à moins de, à partir de, à travers de, au bout de, au cours de, au-delà de, au-dessous de, au-dessus de, au lieu de, auprès de, autour de, au travers de, d'après, de crainte / peur de, de façon / manière à, de la part de, du côté de, du haut de, en dehors de, en dépit de, en face de, face à, grâce à, hors de, jusqu'à, le long de, lors de, par-dessous, par-dessus, par suite de, près de, quant à

Prepositions which link

Prepositions are like hooks which link together elements of language, specifically adjectives, nouns and verbs to verbs.

The number of linking prepositions is small. The prepositions in question are à, de, par.
