Cum in recensenda Epidico perquam molestam J libri condicionem expertus essem, quippe cuius lectiones peculiares utrum ipsius codicis librario an fonti debeantur saepius merito dubitaveris, insigni fortunae beneficio factum est, ut eiusdem classis ignotus adhuc codex saec. XIII ex Ambrosianae thesauris protraheretur, ex quo non modo quid in J librarius peccaverit facile dignoscas, verum etiam proprias quasdam lectiones sane quam utiles commode petas. Quo de codice (E) quae Loewius et ego Mus. Rhen. a. 1879 p. 53 sqq. demonstravimus, eorum summam hoc loco quam paucissimis comprehendere visum est.

Codex Ambrosianus J 257 infer, membr. forma quat. min. saec. XIII foliis 94 octo priores fabulas exhibet; fol. 34–39 (Aulul. II 2, 14–IV 1, 19) saec. XV suppleta sunt: eodem tempore Volcatii Sedigiti versiculi notissimi in fine additi. Correxit codicem homo cum librario aequalis, quibus correcturis cum m. 1 par est auctoritas; quae contra saec. XV ex vulgato textu m. 3 interpolavit, indigna sunt quae respiciantur. Fuit olim codex Ioannis Vincentii Pinelli, postea Friderici Borromei cura in Ambrosianam translatus est.

Ad idem cum J genus pertinere E ex multis scripturis congruentibus facile apparet (cf. p. 56 l. c.); ex J autem ne transcriptum esse statuas, lectionum cum B concinentium multitudine prohiberis: quae cum ex B ipso petitae non sint (cf. p. 57), ad fontem cum B gemellum revocandae videntur. Vnde haec artis criticae lex constituitur: JE codicum lectiones, licet B obstet, diligenter examinandae sunt; contra quas peculiares habet aut J aut E contradicentibus aut BE aut BJ tantum non omnes neglegentiae vel errori tribuendae sunt.
