Summary
Einleitung
Es giebt bei der Betrachtung des Menschengeschlechts zwei Gegenstande, auf welche alle einzelnen Forschungen, als auf den letzten und wichtigsten Punkt, hinausgehen, die Verbreitung und die Steigerung der geistigen Entwicklung. Beide stehen zwar in nothwendigem Zusammenhang, aber nehmen nicht durchaus denselben Weg, und halten nicht immer gleichen Schritt, da es Zeiten gegeben hat, wo die Erkenntniss an Einem Punkte eine ungewöhnliche Hohe erreichte, andere, wo sie, wenig über das schon Errungene hinausgehend, sich allgemeiner vertheilte. Das Letztere begann erst mit Alexanders des Grossen Eroberungen, gewann Bestand durch die Erweiterung des Römischen Reichs, gehört aber im vollsten Maasse nur der neueren Zeit an. Das Erstere ist gewiss dieser nicht fremd, setzt uns aber im Alterthum mehr in Erstaunen, da ein plötzliches Licht aus tiefem Dunkel hervorbricht. Beide erregen auch weder an sich, noch überall den gleichen Antheil. Die Höhe, zu welcher Nachdenken, Wissenschaft und Kunst emporsteigen, die Stufe der Vollkommenheit, welche die von ihnen abhängigen menschlichen Werke und Einrichtungen erreichen, sprechen die bloss nachdenkende Forschung, die dadurch den Umfang des menschlichen Geistes auszumessen sucht, und nicht in dem Kreise örtlichen Strebens befangen bleibt, mehr an, als die, immer zufälligere Mittheilung.
