Summary
During the writing of this book we were hit hard by the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and it is only appropriate to include a chapter describing how point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) played a critical role in triage, diagnosis, management and prognostication. COVID-19 is a disease caused by the virus Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and has stretched healthcare systems beyond anything seen in our lifetimes. Interest and utilisation of POCUS has soared during the pandemic as increasing numbers of clinicians identified the role of lung ultrasound (LUS) in the diagnosis of COVID-19 within minutes without the need for further imaging. Increased accessibility to portable scanners led to the education and rapid upskilling of many clinicians.
